Lack of co-ordination between civic departments may lead to installation of public Wi-Fi stations that could be misused

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) clearly has not deliberated before inviting tenders to install Wi-Fi Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) on the flyovers, skywalks, Foot Over Bridges and subways to enable commuters to access internet using their mobile phones.

Keeping in mind the past instances, where Wi-Fi networks have been hacked to send threat emails, Sunday MiD DAY spoke to Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) Chief Rakesh Maria of the security threats of the proposed project.

Maria said, "If MMRDA is planning to install Wi-Fi -enabled BTS on the flyovers, subways, FOBs and skywalks, then it should take all necessary precautions. People can be prevented from misusing Wi-Fi networks if MMRDA installs secure connections that will permit access only to people with passwords."

On being informed about the views expressed by the police on the installation of Wi-Fi systems, MMRDA Commissioner Rahul Asthana said, "If the police feels that installing Wi-Fi enabled BTS can pose a security threat, then we will have a discussion over the security measures and may even scrap the project."

This only goes to show the lack of co-ordination between various government departments.

Meanwhile, independent transport expert Jitendra Gupta feels that installing Wi-Fi is nothing but a waste of public money. "Rather than wasting money on installing Wi-Fi systems, MMRDA should install CCTV cameras on the flyovers and skywalks to upgrade security."

Another important and obvious point Gupta raised is the need to have Wi-Fi systems on flyovers. "The plan of MMRDA to install Wi-Fi on flyovers is a waste of money. Who is going to park the car on the flyover and access the Internet," Gupta asked.
