More than 19,000 voters in the 18-19 years age group were added in the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-city-sees-1-6-lakh-dip-in-voters-23331681" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai suburban district</a> in the recent updation of electoral rolls, an official said on Wednesday, reported news agency PTI.
The final electoral rolls before the coming Lok Sabha elections were published earlier this week.
Tejas Samel, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-sees-surge-in-young-voters-as-state-poll-body-upates-electoral-rolls-23331556" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">deputy district electoral officer</a> for Mumbai suburban district, told reporters that the number of voters in the age group 18-19 went up by 19,360, which was a sizable rise, reported PTI.
"The total increase in voters in Mumbai suburban district is 26,629. With this rise, the total number of voters in the suburban district has reached 72,17,308," he said, reported PTI.
"There are 38,88,603 male voters, 33,27,905 women voters and 800 Transgenders. As many as 14,113 voters are in the disabled category," he added, reported PTI.
During updation, officials found 14,078 entries having similar photos and the names of 4,553 voters were deleted after scrutiny.
Meanwhile, civic employees will visit as many as 39 lakh households in Mumbai during an ongoing survey of the Marathas and other general category communities, the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maratha-reservation-bmc-services-hit-as-staff-takes-on-survey-23331659" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</a> (BMC) said on Wednesday.
The survey, which began on Tuesday, was being conducted on the directions of the Maharashtra State Commission for Backward Classes for assessing the social, economic and educational backwardness of the Maratha community.
The drive has been undertaken even as activist Manoj Jarange and thousands of his supporters are on their way to Mumbai to launch a fresh agitation for reservation for the Maratha community from January 26.
The BMC has roped in about 30,000 of its around 92,000 employees for the seven-day survey that has to be completed before the end of this month, said <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maratha-quota-39-lakh-households-in-mumbai-to-be-surveyed-23331636" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">additional municipal commissioner</a> Sudhakar Shinde, reported PTI.
Appealing people to extend cooperation to the enumerators as the survey is to be completed within deadline, he also made it clear that taking part in the exercise is voluntary, and the data collected will remain completely safe, reported PTI.
On Tuesday, the enumerators faced some trouble while gaining entry into housing societies and a glitch in the software also caused problems, yet about 2.65 lakh households were surveyed, Shinde noted, reported PTI.
