Vile Parle’s centenarian heads to BKC centre for inoculation to end confinement
When centre in-charge Dr Rajesh Dere heard that Khedkar was celebrating her 100th birthday, he arranged for a cake as well
On Friday, Vile Parle resident Prabhavati Khedkar had a double celebration. Not only did she turn a 100 years old, she also took her first step towards freedom from COVID-19, by getting herself vaccinated, along with her family. Khedkar, who is active and prefers doing her own chores said this was the beginning of the end of her “house imprisonment”.
Khedkar, born in Karnataka’s Bellari, came to Mumbai before Independence. Her family changed several locations through 74 years, before settling in Vile Parle. She now stays with her son and his family. On March 5, she along with her two sons and daughter-in-law reached BKC’s Jumbo COVID centre to take the vaccine.

“My grandmother reads and watches the news every day. Due to the pandemic, she has been indoors for almost a year now. She was very active in religious events and would actively participate in bhajans,” said Ruchita, Khedkar’s granddaughter. “So, when the vaccine got available for senior citizens, we all decided to take her for the same.”
On Friday, 37,000 people received the jab, of which 23,000 were senior citizens and 5,700 received their second jab. Overall, more than three lakh residents have been inoculated so far. The city’s 60 centres can inoculate 20,000 people in a day. But on Saturday, 37,309 people received the vaccine. There will be no vaccination on Sunday.
