The police walked their talk this Holi. Cracking down on drink driving, the Mumbai and Thane police booked 819 persons for the offence. They booked a total of 13,126 persons, including 8,102 by Mumbai traffic police alone, for drink driving, triple seat, riding without helmets and rash driving.

The Mumbai traffic police had posted 1,141 constabulary staff on the roads and 150 officers to monitor them, while the Thane division had deputed 429 constables and 63 police officers to duty.
&ldquo;We have been carrying out a campaign against drink driving. On Tuesday, we booked 137 persons for drink driving under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, 120 on Wednesday and 132 on the day of Holi,&rdquo; said Dr Rashmi Karandikar, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Thane.
In Mumbai, all 34 police chowkies chipped in for the campaign. &ldquo;We wanted people to have safe celebrations. Our aim was to ensure that no untoward incident took place on the roads,&rdquo; said Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police (traffic), Mumbai.
During Holi and New Year celebrations, the police launch a campaign to urge drunk revellers to hire cabs or take the public transport.
Errant motorists caught for drink driving are slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 by the police and their vehicles are seized. They then have to approach court to get their vehicles back. The court decides the mode of punishment &mdash; fine, jail term or temporary suspension of the driving licence.
