Mumbai: 21-year-old biker dies after throat cut by manja

Mohammed Saif Israil Farooque had been wearing a helmet

A 21-year-old man lost his life after a kite string cut his neck while he was riding his two-wheeler in Borivali on Sunday. The victim, identified as Mohammed Saif Israil Farooque, a resident of Dharavi and an AC mechanic, was returning home around 3.15 pm when the incident occurred on the Borivli East-West flyover bridge near Sumer Nagar.

According to the Borivli police, Farooque had gone to Charkop for an AC repair job with his friend Hameed Anees Ahmad, 19. While returning, Farooque was riding and Hameed was the pillion rider. Farooque, who was wearing a helmet, reached the Sumer Nagar flyover bridge en route to the Western Express Highway when a kite string sliced through his throat.

Recounting the incident to mid-day, Hameed said, “Initially, I didn’t understand what had happened. The bike’s speed was about 50 kmph, and suddenly Farooque lost control, and we fell on the bridge. That’s when I noticed a string around Farooque’s neck, and he was bleeding. I rushed him to Shatabdi Hospital, where he was alive but succumbed to his injuries after 15 minutes.”

Farooque, originally from Allahabad’s Lalalgunj area and currently residing in Dharavi, worked as an AC mechanic with his maternal uncle. Hameed, a Std 10 student, had come to Mumbai to attend a relative’s wedding. Hameed informed Farooque’s family, who reside in their native village, about the tragic incident.

The Borivli police have registered a case against an unknown person for causing death by negligence. Senior Inspector Ninand Sawant stated, “We are trying to trace the owner of the kite responsible for the man’s death.” Initially reported to the Kasturba Marg police, the case was later transferred to the Borivli police.

This incident marks the second fatality caused by a kite string in Mumbai within a month. On December 25, a police constable, Suresh Jadhav, 37, of Dindoshi police, lost his life on the Vakola flyover in Santacruz East when a manja or kite string, hanging unseen, caused a deep gash on his throat, leading to his immediate demise.
