Three cars and a motorcycle were completely burnt when the garbage duct of a building in Borivli caught fire yesterday. The fire brigade rushed to the spot and managed to bring the flames under control to ensure there were no casualties or injuries.

Police suspect someone threw a firecracker down the chute after India emerged victorious over South Africa in their World Cup game yesterday. The incident occurred in the 24-storey B wing of the MHADA tower situated in Chikuwadi, Borivli (West), at around 4.30 pm yesterday.

The duct, made of aluminium composite plate, is a common chute to allow people to throw their garbage, and is attached to the building from the outside. Ajit Kour, a resident, said, &ldquo;At around 4.30 pm, we smelt something burning and saw flames coming out of the garbage duct.

We suspect someone threw a firecracker or a cigarette inside it, due to which a fire broke out. We used a fire extinguisher to control the flames, but they had already reached the cars parked on the ground floor.&rdquo;
Another resident, Kamlesh Jain said, &ldquo;This is the second fire incident in our society. We informed the fire brigade and later also threw water into the duct from the 24th floor. We told all residents to lock their doors and come down before the fire increased. I lost my new Nano car, which got completely burnt in the incident.&rdquo;
Celebrations gone awry? Three fire engines and three water tankers arrived on the spot to control the blaze, which took almost an hour to be extinguished. Local police also came to the scene.
While there were no injuries or fatalities, three cars and a motorcycle parked on the ground floor were completely charred, along with the duct. Both firefighters and the police couldn&rsquo;t ascertain the cause of the fire.
A police officer from Charkop police station, on condition of anonymity, said, &ldquo;The fire may have been caused due to someone throwing a matchstick, cigarette or a firecracker inside the duct.&rdquo;
Another police officer added, &ldquo;India and South Africa clashed in the cricket World Cup yesterday and India won around 4.20 pm. This incident occurred around 4.30 pm.
We suspect someone threw fireworks inside the duct for fun and as celebration.&rdquo; Cops have taken possession of all the burnt garbage and have sent it to a forensic lab to determine the cause.
