Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) suspend all private construction activity in the city for at least a week, citing Mumbai's air pollution, reported the PTI.

Aaditya cited worsening air quality and visible haze in parts of the city.

Speaking at Vidhan Bhavan, Aaditya Thackeray emphasised that construction work significantly contributes to air pollution in Mumbai.

He urged the BMC to temporarily stop all private construction projects for a minimum of seven days, prepare proper construction management schedules and implement strict anti-pollution measures before allowing work to resume.

He criticised the civic body for allegedly ignoring the health concerns of Mumbaikars.

Call for strict enforcement of norms

Aaditya Thackeray stressed the importance of enforcing existing environmental regulations. He claimed the authorities appeared indifferent to public health and highlighted the dangers posed by uncontrolled construction dust.

In a post on X, he remarked, “If Mumbaikars breathing polluted air does not bother you, just imagine that a VIP is coming to the city for a week.”

Probe into alleged animal cruelty

Separately, Aaditya Thackeray wrote a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and have urged to investigate reported cruelty at an animal shelter in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. He alleged stray dogs were mistreated and called for the arrest of the culprits. He also suggested revoking the organisation’s licence due to foreign funding.

In a post on X, the Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA said he had urged the Chief Minister to take strict action against the NGO running the shelter and to ban it if necessary. He also called for strong punishment against those allegedly involved in torturing stray dogs.

Aaditya Thackeray described the incident as serious and demanded immediate action to ensure justice and prevent such cases in future.
