Police have booked Suresh Nakhua, a BJP spokesperson, for triggering panic among the masses with an unverified video. He had tweeted a 19-second clip claiming that an alive person was taken to a crematorium. He later apologised. “This is beyond shocking, A living man taken to a cremation centre by BMC, I think there might be some MahavasuliTarget from cremation centres by MahavasuliAghadi govt,” he wrote.
As the video created ripples on social media, BMC’s Twitter team got in touch with Nakhua seeking more details about the video. He couldn’t provide the location shown in the video and the day it was shot. Sources said he first allegedly said he would provide the information only to top civic officials. But, when he remained silent and began evading calls, the BMC approached the Bhoiwada police.
Nakhua had told mid-day that the video was of the Dahanukarwadi crematorium in Kandivli, which was found to be incorrect on verification.
On April 21, police visited his Ghatkopar home but he couldn’t have anything to back his claims. The next day, he tweeted, “I was not aware of the location of the incident and could not verify it. This video was tweeted as it disturbed me immensely and to alert the authorities. There was no intention whatsoever to cause panic. I regret the inconvenience caused to authorities and the general public. If any, due to my act and my sincere apologies for the same.” He has been booked under the IPC and the Disaster Management Act 2005.
