Mumbai: BMC chief inspects Kanjurmarg solid waste facility amid foul smell complaints

To review measures aimed at preventing foul odour from the municipal solid waste management facility in Kanjurmarg Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide conducted a surprise inspection at the site early on Wednesday according to the BMCThe civic body said Bhide spent nearly oneandahalf hours inspecting various operations at the facility and reviewing solid waste management processes She also directed officials to improve operational efficiency and strengthen mitigation measures where requiredAccording to the BMC the commissioner inspected the waste segregation centre composting unit wastetoenergy plant and the bioreactor landfill site during the visitOdour mitigation systems reviewedThe BMC said bioenzymebased liquid is being sprayed on waste at the site to minimise foul smell and reduce inconvenience to residents living nearby In addition fragrancebased solutions are being sprayed through a misting system installed around the waste receiving areaThe civic body stated that 11 misting cannon systems are currently operational at the project site for odour control Bhide also reviewed the functioning of a helpline set up to address complaints related to foul smell from surrounding areas the BMC addedOver 6000 metric tonnes of waste processed dailyAccording to the BMC the Kanjurmarg municipal solid waste management project is spread across 11814 hectares or nearly 292 acresThe civic body said around 5200 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste are processed daily through bioreactor technology while another 1000 metric tonnes are treated using composting technologyMethane gas generated during waste processing is partially used for electricity generation within the project while the remaining gas is scientifically flared the BMC saidTo prevent waste from coming into contact with air and to control odour and gas emissions soil cover is being placed over the waste officials added Bhide also inspected these measures and issued further directions during the visitDeputy Municipal Commissioner Prashant Gaikwad Deputy Municipal Commissioner Solid Waste Management Kiran Dighavkar and other civic officials were present during the inspection according to the BMCAshwini Bhide inspects sanitation workersrsquo outpost in VikhroliBrihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ashwini Bhide conducted a surprise inspection of a sanitation workersrsquo outpost at Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli East on Wednesday morning civic officials saidAccording to the BMC Bhide interacted with sanitation workers stationed at the outpost in the S Ward and reviewed ongoing cleanliness operations in the areaDuring the visit she directed civic officials to prioritise the cleanliness of roads surrounding areas and junctions across Mumbai with a stronger focus on sanitation effortsEmphasis on public awareness and use of modern machineryThe BMC said the Municipal Commissioner also instructed officials to work towards eliminating garbage dumping spots through sustained public awareness initiatives and regular monitoringShe further stressed the need for effective utilisation of available modern sanitation machinery and manpower to improve waste management operations and maintain cleanliness standards in the cityDeputy Commissioner Prashant Gaikwad Deputy Commissioner Solid Waste Management Kiran Dighavkar Deputy Commissioner Zone 6 Santoshkumar Dhonde Assistant Commissioner Samreen Sayyed and other civic officials were present during the inspection the BMC added
