Mumbai: BMC grants permission at 109 locations for Bakri Eid animal slaughter

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC has started preparations at the Deonar Abattoir ahead of Bakri Eid 2026 with arrangements being made for security sanitation medical aid water supply and animal management civic officials said on FridayAccording to the BMC the animal market for buffaloes and goats will be held at the Deonar Abattoir from May 17 to May 30 Bakri Eid is expected to be observed on May 28 this yearThe civic body said a review meeting was recently conducted at the BMC headquarters under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Ashwini Joshi to assess preparedness by municipal departments and other agencies involved in festival arrangementsPermission Granted at 109 Locations Across MumbaiAccording to the BMC permission has been granted at 109 locations across Mumbai for religious animal slaughter between May 28 and May 30Civic officials said citizens seeking permission for slaughter at designated or other locations can apply through the MyBMC mobile application where registration will be mandatoryThe BMC has also made online arrangements available on its official website for import permits of buffaloes and goats as well as slot booking for religious slaughter Officials said allotment of animal sheds will be done through a computerized ldquofirst come first servedrdquo systemHowever the civic body clarified that buffalo slaughter will be permitted only at the Deonar Abattoir in accordance with the existing religious slaughter policyControl Room Helplines and Security Measures PlannedThe BMC said a 24x7 control room will be operational during the festival period to address complaints and handle emergenciesDedicated helpline numbers mdash 9076000481 9076000482 9076000483 and 9076000484 mdash will be available for public assistanceAccording to civic officials 21 police outposts two watch towers nearly 500 police personnel and around 200 civic security guards will be deployed at the site for security arrangementsThe Deonar facility will also be monitored through a network of more than 500 CCTV cameras including permanent bullet dome and PTZ cameras Temporary surveillance cameras will also be installed during the festival periodAdditional Water Supply and Medical Facilities ArrangedThe civic body said a total shelter area of 110106 square metres has been arranged for animals through permanent and temporary facilities An additional 10000 square metre area has been earmarked for buffalo slaughterTo meet increased demand during the festival period the BMC said an additional one million litres of water will be supplied over the regular daily supply of 13 million litres Around 150 water tanks and several water kiosks will also be installed at the siteMedical arrangements will include two health centres two ambulances two veterinary health centres and veterinarians for animal inspections according to the civic administrationWaste Management and Public Facilities in PlaceThe BMC said it expects nearly 7500 metric tonnes of waste to be generated during the 15day period and has planned deployment of sanitation workers vehicles and machinery for waste collection and disposalAround 600 sanitation workers will be deployed during the three main slaughter days officials addedThe civic body also said no entry fee will be charged for vehicles transporting meat during the slaughter periodOther public facilities planned at the Deonar Abattoir include permanent and mobile toilets separate bathing facilities for women dewatering pumps for monsoon preparedness fire safety systems and temporary eateries for visitorsAccording to the BMC QR codebased verification systems will also be installed at entry and exit points to regulate animal movement and registration processes more efficiently
