If everything works out as per the plan chalked out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), then by year 2019 the city will have its first &lsquo;Water Supply Information and Training Centre&rsquo; that will have on display the functioning of the city&rsquo;s water supply network and its history.

The civic body is likely to make a budgetary provision of Rs 48 crore in upcoming 2015-16 budget for the project. The centre will be open to all, including researchers and students. Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte had announced the project during his 2014-15 budget speech.
What to expect The centre will have detailed information like when exactly did the city&rsquo;s water supply network commence, time-to-time changes in the network, technology used in its expansion, equipment used in controlling this vast network, upcoming projects to increase the water supply, monitoring and distribution of water and steps taken to keep tab on quality control.
Photographs will be displayed and a virtual classroom will be developed to benefit students and researchers alike. The corporation has already started working on the project and the process of finalising the location for the centre is almost done.

Official speak &ldquo;On several occasions, foreign delegates visit Mumbai to understand one of the biggest water supply networks in India. But we don&rsquo;t have a platform to explain it properly. This centre will fill that void,&rdquo; said an officer from the water department. &ldquo;After Expression of Interest (EOI), the corporation has shortlisted four companies.
Once our consultant gives us the blueprint for the project, we&rsquo;ll award the contract to one of the four companies. While the BMC is likely to keep aside Rs 48 crore for the centre, the final decision will be taken next month.&rdquo; Deputy Chief Hydraulic Engineer A S Tawadiya said, &ldquo;The concept of creating an information centre was first announced during last year&rsquo;s budget.
Our new recruits will be trained there once it is up and functioning. The entire system can be explained easily. Currently, there is no such centre where all the information is available under one roof.&rdquo;
