The Indian Railways has finally approved the introduction of Bombardier rakes on the Mumbai suburban railway network and the two prototypes will start plying from March 18.
The railways has been conducting trials of the new Bombardier make of trains since November 2013.

On Monday, the rail ministry approved the train with vital directives that stated that the two prototype trains will operate, but with some conditions.
Officials claimed that though the trains had been being procured as being Mumbai's fastest trains that could touch 120 kmph and were expected to run at 110 kmph, the actual running speed will be different.
Sources in Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation&nbsp;(MRVC) said that these two trains will run at at 70 kmph on the slow lines between Churchgate and Borivali, at 80 kmph on the fast lines on the same stretch and at speeds up to 105 kmph between Borivali-Virar-Dahanu.
These trains will run for a period of 6 months during which the rail authorities will study its working and functioning and send a report to Delhi. Even the issue of the platforms' height will be checked. As per plans, the railways will bring in 72 Bombardier EMUs.
These trains have been tested and have been undergoing trials since November 2013 for several reasons. The Western Railway (WR) authorities have been conducting physical tests on them. These include the trains being run at high speeds late at night (2-4 am), checking the train&rsquo;s vibration when in movement, the functioning of wires, cables and other equipment inside the train, its synchronisation with the signals next to the tracks and other details.
The railways have been waiting for the new trains and once they have been inducted the old trains will be discarded.
