The Lodha Group seems to have gone ahead and renamed Senapati Bapat Marg as The Golden Mile. The group spokesperson claims an association named it, not the group, but justified it.

Senapati Bapat Marg at Worli has many structures like Phoenix Mills, Kamala Mills and the Mathuradas Mill along it. Malls, St Regis hotel, etc, have occupied both sides of the road. Lodha has started construction of its Trump Tower here and it is for this project that it has used the name the Golden Mile.

Lodha&rsquo;s website about The Park has a brief explanation about the renaming. It reads, &ldquo;Mumbai: The city that never sleeps. The financial capital of India and home to some of the wealthiest people in the world has a golden mile in South Mumbai. The Golden Mile of Mumbai extends from SB Marg to PB Marg. As the name suggests, The Golden Mile is a mile in length, however the Golden Mile in Mumbai extends to &nbsp; a little over one mile (about 1.3 mile to be precise).&rdquo;
A Lodha spokesperson claimed it was an association that named the road. The official spokesperson of Lodha said, &ldquo;The name Golden Mile is used worldwide, depicting a concentration of various entertainment spaces, business parks, residential developments, hotels and shopping malls. The Mumbai Mile Regeneration Association (MMRA), a private non-governmental association, undertook an initiative to create and foster an international standard boulevard in Mumbai &mdash; The Golden Mile. It starts from Deepak Cinema Junction, Worli and extends up to Mahalaxmi Junction which is home to many landmark developments like High Street Phoenix, Peninsula Corporate Park, Kamala Mills, The World Towers, Four Seasons Hotel, St Regis Hotel, among others.&rdquo;
The spokesperson further claimed that they have the support of various other builders and some housing societies. &ldquo;Under the Golden Mile plan, MMRA proposes to create walk-friendly zones and public spaces, ease vehicular congestion and encourage public and private participation for cohesive development. Lodha Group is leading this initiative with other key partners such as Phoenix Towers Society, Casa Grande Society, Enpar Group, Phoenix Mills, Brady Plaza, Bombay Dyeing, Jones Lang LaSalle, Ashok Piramal Group and Empire Estate Society,&rdquo; said the spokesperson.
Official speak However, the BMC says no one can change the name of a road unless they (the BMC) change it. &ldquo;We will look at the website of the builder, where they have called Senapati Bapat Marg as The Golden Mile. Only the municipal corporation can change names. I will have to look into it,&rdquo; said the ward officer of G-South ward, B Kapase.
The Post Master General, PN Ranjit Kumar of Mumbai circle said, &ldquo;The decision of renaming or naming a road is of the state government or the municipal authority. Only when they do it we take note of it. The postal department works on those lines.&rdquo;
Senapati Bapat Senapati Bapat Road was named after Pandurang Bapat, who was attributed the title Senapati after his successful leadership during the Mulshi Satyagraha in the pre-Independence era. He played a major role in the struggle for Independence.
