As part of the construction of twin tunnels for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday said that excavation using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will begin in June.

At present, the work of the ‘launching shaft’ for the twin tunnels has been completed, and concrete pouring in the cradle is underway. Two tunnel boring machines will be used for the construction of the underground twin tunnels. After completion of the first phase of excavation work, the process of lowering the tunnel boring machine into the shaft will begin on March 10.

Concrete has been poured in the mould and curing is expected to be completed in the next three days. A 20m x 20m x 2.5m curved concrete cradle has been prepared at the bottom of the shaft,” the BMC said in the statement.

Heavy cranes to lift TBM components as GMLR twin tunnel assembly begins

Cranes with capacities of 800 metric tonnes and 350 metric tonnes are required to lower the equipment into the tunnel. The 350-metric-tonne crane has already reached the site, while the spare parts of the 800-metric-tonne crane have also arrived. The crane is expected to be fully operational by March 7, following which a load test will be conducted on March 8. The spare parts of the tunnel boring machines will be lowered using the 800-metric-tonne crane.

After the load test, the process of assembling the main parts of the tunnel boring machine — including the main shield, cutter head, screw conveyor, main bearing and erector — will begin from March 10.

The GMLR is set to become a major east-west connector in north Mumbai and is expected to help reduce traffic congestion in the suburbs.
