In a major relief for Mumbaikars, especially motorists and commuters, the Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has confirmed that natural gas supply to the city has been completely normalised following the successful repair of the damaged Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) pipeline.
In its latest update, MGL stated: “The rectification work of GAIL’s damaged main gas pipeline in RCF Trombay premises has been completed and gas supply to MGL’s City Gate Station (CGS), Wadala by GAIL has been restored. The gas supply to the affected CNG stations in Mumbai, Thane & Navi Mumbai has been restored. Restoration of gas supply to affected Industrial & Commercial customers is in progress.”
According to MGL, the supply was restored on Tuesday around 3.30-4 pm.
The disruption began when third-party damage occurred to GAIL’s main pipeline inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) Trombay compound, cutting off flow to MGL’s Wadala City Gate Station and impacting a large number of CNG stations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Over the past two days, taxis, autorickshaws, app-cabs, and school vans had formed long queues outside fuel stations to refill CNG, with waiting times stretching to three–four hours. Around 40 per cent of the city’s 389 CNG stations were either shut or running on critically low pressure until this afternoon.
With the supply resuming, the pressure has rapidly normalised across the network, and queues have started clearing. All CNG stations are now receiving gas.
MGL has expressed gratitude to customers for their patience and cooperation during the disruption, which lasted approximately 48 hours.
Meanwhile, domestic PNG supply to households remained unaffected throughout the incident.
