The Matunga police have arrested a 37-year-old conman who would offer people spiked drinks and then rob them. He was operating in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

In March, the Valsad police had arrested the accused Haji Hasam Sama, but he managed to flee from the court premises after his wife and brother offered a spiked drink to the two constables who were escorting him. After the cops fell unconscious, Sama made good his escape.
According to the police officials, the accused has around 33 cases registered against him in Gujarat. Sama had been hiding in Goregaon since the time he managed to flee from the clutches of the Valsad police. Police Inspector Vijay Kamble from Matunga police station said, &ldquo;We had a case of vehicle theft registered with us in July and the investigation revealed that he (Sama) had stolen it.

We got information that a certain individual had been hiding in Mumbai who had committed multiple offences along with this vehicle theft. We had our eyes on the accused and as soon as he came to Matunga on Sunday, we arrested him. During the course of the investigations it was revealed that the accused had committed other offences as well.&rdquo;
The Valsad incident took place on March 26 and since then, Sama has been staying in a rented apartment at Goregaon along with his family. Assistant Commissioner of Police Vijay Bagwe (Matunga division) said, &ldquo;In Gujarat, the accused would rent a car to a certain destination and sighting an opportunity, he would offer them (the drivers) something to drink or eat following which they would become unconscious.

After the driver lost consciousness, the accused would drop him on the side of the road and flee with the valuables from the driver&rsquo;s body and the car.&rdquo; In one such incident, a victim had even died; the case was under trial in Valsad court.
&ldquo;So after the court hearing, when the accused was being taken to jail, he, along with his wife Marium alias Reshma and his brother, had planned the escape. Sama asked them to take a halt near a restaurant where they offered the constables a drink after which they fell unconscious,&rdquo; said Kamble.
Since the incident, the accused has committed similar offences in Mumbai, Boisar, Vasai, Nalasopara and Dahanu, among other places. &ldquo;Sama had been working as a carpenter since the age of 20 but he started committing such offences two years ago, as he claimed that people would fall prey very easily when he offered them free drinks.
So this started giving him easy money,&rdquo; said sub-inspector, Dhananjay Devdikar from Matunga. The accused has been booked under Section 379 (robbery) of the IPC. He was produced in Kurla court on Monday and has been remanded to police custody.
