Following mid-day&rsquo;s report on a 15-year-old gang-rape victim who died without justice as the cops refused to take responsibility for her case, the Marine Drive police finally registered the FIR yesterday.

This long-pending move comes a full 10 months after the gang rape, and nearly four months after the girl breathed her last, never to see her assailants being punished.

This paper had reported just yesterday that even after the teenager died, police departments continued to palm off the case to each other, hoping to avoid any controversy (&lsquo;<a href="http://www.mid-day.com/articles/mumbai-gang-rape-victim-dies-without-justice-as-cops-pass-the-buck/16054155" target="_blank">While cops squabble over FIR for a year, gang-raped girl dies&rsquo;</a>, March 12).
It was after mid-day intervened and called senior IPS officers to discuss the issue on Wednesday that the Marine Drive police registered the FIR. &ldquo;We will dispose of the case soon now, as we have registered the FIR.
The case should have been registered earlier itself, but our seniors did not give any permission, saying the case was not likely to be detected,&rdquo; said an officer from Marine Drive police station.
Case History On April 29, 2014, four men allegedly gang-raped a mentally disturbed 15-year-old at the Churchgate subway after forcing her to drink beer.
The Churchgate Government Railway Police (GRP) filed an FIR but then transferred the case to the Marine Drive police, which had jurisdiction at the crime scene. However, the police did not register the case and simply sat on the file.
On November 17, 2014, the teenager died of asthma in Nair Hospital, without a single attempt being made to arrest the rapists. After her death, the Marine Drive police decided to dispose of the case, but realised that they were in a fix, as they had let the file gather dust for months.
In January, eight months after the crime, the Marine Drive police sent the case back to the Churchgate GRP, which then returned the file, saying it was not in their jurisdiction. The file was passed around two more times the last exchange took place last week.
