If the state agrees to the overhaul proposed by the city police department after receiving its proposal, there is a possibility that it could result in better policing.

In the proposal, which currently sits with the joint commissioner of police, the department has requested increasing the existing number of ACPs and DCPs. In addition, the department has also proposed restructuring zones as per population, geographical location, law-and -order situation, crime rate and easy access to the police stations by senior officers, to keep a tab on the crime rate on a regular-basis.
&ldquo;We discovered that the work has been distributed unequally amongst ACPs and DCPs. While a few DCPs have been given the charge of 10 police stations, others have seven. The biggest problem is that some of the police stations are far from a certain DCP&rsquo;s office, making it difficult for the officer to visit them regularly,&rdquo; said DCP (Traffic) Pratap Dighavkar.
Dighavkar heads the committee appointed by former police commissioner Dr Satyapal Singh, after the Shakti Mills gang-rape case, responsible for upgrading the department for better functioning.
&ldquo;One of the changes mentioned in the proposal focuses on equal allocation of police stations amongst officers. We have suggested that no ACP should be given charge of more than four stations. This will not only help improve the officer&rsquo;s efficacy, but will also allow him/her to visit the police stations regularly,&rdquo; said Dighavkar.
A senior police officer said that equal distribution of work would eventually result in bettering the quality of surveillance and policing across the city.
