<p>Mumbai was the country&rsquo;s most and the world&rsquo;s fifth-most congested city of 2021 as per the <a href="https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/traffic-index/india-country-traffic/" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">TomTom Traffic Index</a> based on study of 404 cities across 58 countries. Another Maharashtra city, Pune, ranked fourth in India among most congested cities.</p>
<p>According to the index, Mumbai&rsquo;s worst traffic day was on August 21, 2021.</p>
<p>TomTom index, now in its 11<sup>th</sup> year, provides real-time traffic management and historical traffic congestion data to help governments plan their infrastructure projects and initiate more public transport schemes.</p>
<p>This year, the Maximum City&rsquo;s congestion level was at 53 per cent, followed by Bengaluru and New Delhi at 48 per cent.</p>
<p>Percentage of congestion level means the extra travel time a driver has to spend for reaching from one spot to another over and above the time required in the normal and free-flow traffic situation.</p>
<p>A 50 per cent congestion level implies that on average, travel times were 50 per cent longer than during uncongested conditions. This means a 30-minute drive in free-flow condition will require 50 per cent more time, or 15 more minutes more to cover the same distance when congestion is at 50 per cent.</p><p>
