Three robbers on a bike shot a rice trader in Virar and stole Rs 8 lakh from him on Sunday night. Cops said that the accused opened fire at the trader while he was keeping his bag containing the cash in his Scooty&rsquo;s storage case. The victim sustained two bullet injuries to his stomach, following which he lost his life.

Ashok Ramanlal Shah, (50), a resident of Yeshwant Nagar, Virar (W), was a wholesaler of rice and had a sprawling godown in Tandul Bazar, Chandansar Road,Virar (E). This weekend, Shah had sealed a good business deal, following which he received Rs 8 lakh.

While he was about to keep the cash in his Activa, three persons arrived on a Pulsar bike, accosted him and tried to snatch the bag. Police said as Shah resisted, in panic, the accused opened fire at him. Shah sustained injuries to his stomach, following which he fell on the ground and the accused fled. &ldquo;According to eyewitnesses, the accused fled towards the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. The police team has collected a bullet which fell on the ground and have sent it for ballistic analysis,&rdquo; said inspector Sunil Mane of Virar police station. The watchman of the godown called locals and rushed Shah to the Sanjeevani Hospital in Virar (W) where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

From the preliminary investigation, the police said it is evident that some insider is hand in glove with the accused. They said the way the attackers had struck shows that they were confident they would find cash with Shah.
The police said it was Shah&rsquo;s routine to carry cash home to deposit it in the bank on Mondays. &ldquo;We have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) and Arms Act against the unidentified assailants, and are trying to get the CCTV camera images from the nearby area,&rdquo; Mane added.
A cousin of the deceased, Dilip Shah, said, &ldquo;No one came forward to help my brother. Two of his employees, including a woman, rushed him to the hospital in an autorickshaw. He lost a lot of blood before reaching the hospital. Following the news, all local businessmen and political leaders rushed to the hospital. We had arranged around 20 bottles of blood from Malad, Kandivli and Bandra. Some of the best surgeons from Vasai-Virar belt were called to assist in the surgery, but still, we could not save my brother.&rdquo;
Shah, the police said, is survived by two daughters. One has just given her board examinations, while the second is in Std VIII. Shah had lost his wife two years ago after she was detected with cancer.
&ldquo;The girls have become orphans. Thankfully, they live in a joint family and will be taken care of,&rdquo; said Dilip Shah.
