Now, here’s a possible approach to lure GenZ into museums. Last Sunday, the grand old halls of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) saw footfalls from an unlikely audience. After all, the city museum was the first Indian partner on the fourth edition of A Very Laufey Day, an annual celebration by Icelandic singer-musician Laufey Lín Bing Jonsdottir AKA Laufey.

“They [the foundation] had reached out to us. This year, they wanted to encourage her fans to experience art and culture, as she began her journey with Classical music,” shared Vaidehi Savnal, assistant director, CSMVS.

With the European art collection resonating with the singer’s Icelandic roots and myths, Mumbai featured on the map of cities hosting the edition this year. “We had a lot of young people drop in. It was a refreshingly unique experience,” Savnal admitted.

Whoever said artists labour to create magic? For London-based artist Mary Pye and Parnika Mittal, their five-week residency promises art, architecture, and exploration. The two artists have been picked by the New York-based non-profit, For Art and Culture in India (FACII) for their inaugural artist residency that began on August 21. Centred on Abode Bombay and Jaipur, the residency focusses as much on art as on architecture, and the cities. “From early morning walks around Colaba with architect Nikhil Mahashur, to visiting Sassoon Dock, the artists will also visit and meet artisans who work with locally sourced khadi,” shared Eirini Meze, curator, MeSo Ventures. Now, that’s one way to paint the city.

Who needs a nightclub when the city’s biggest flower market amps things up at 4 am? DJ and musician Sartek AKA Sarthak Sardana recently turned the Dadar flower market into an unlikely dance floor, as a part of his latest music visual. Sartek explained to this diarist about his unique idea for the video and location, “It emerged since I was promoting my album, Filmi House, a remix of my take on iconic Bollywood songs with nostalgic sounds, built for the dance floor. For that purpose, the location had to be something truly Mumbai.
