Areas near railway stations frequently witness traffic-clogged roads. But when it comes to Sion station, the administration seems to have found a solution. As part of BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta and Mumbai police commissioner Ahmad Javed&rsquo;s joint effort to unclog the city, Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg, near Sion station, will be widened to resolve traffic snarls in the area.

The 30-metre-long stretch that leads to Kurla from Sion station will be widened from the existing 60 feet to around 90 feet. The BMC is currently in the process of moving 20 commercial structures to help begin the widening soon, which will be completed in two months. The road that was supposed to be 90 feet wide has been narrowed by legal and illegal structures, which have also reduced the width of the footpath.
&ldquo;This is the reason we want to widen this 30-metre-long patch immediately. There are 20 commercial structures here but only seven of them are legal. These seven will first be shifted as their owners will fall under Project-Affected People and following that the demolition drive will begin. We have sent a proposal to the estate department for the alternative accommodation,&rdquo; said Metkar, executive engineer, G/north ward.
LBS Marg is a 21-km road that begins from Sion station and goes all the way to Thane thus becoming an important source of connectivity between the two cities. The stretch, which will be widened, is the road&rsquo;s point of origin.
