The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-water-crisis-bmc-halts-water-supply-to-swimming-pools-and-construction-sites-23635489" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)</a> carried out a major demolition and clearance drive on June 17, 2026 in Goregaon West in Mumbai.
The operation was undertaken to remove structures obstructing the widening of Bandu Gore Marg, a busy road located outside Goregaon Railway Station.
The action was conducted by the P South Ward of the BMC under the guidance of Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 4) Dr Bhagyeshree Kapse and the leadership of Assistant Commissioner Aniruddha Kulkarni.
As part of the road widening project, a total of 43 non-residential structures that were blocking the proposed expansion were rehabilitated and removed.
The civic administration stated that the clearance was necessary to improve traffic movement and public convenience in the heavily crowded area around the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-crs-slum-demolition-clears-path-for-long-pending-kalwa-airoli-rail-corridor-23634757" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">railway station</a>.
<h2>Road width increased significantly</h2>
Before the operation, Bandu Gore Marg had an approximate width of 30 feet. Following the removal of the obstructing structures, the road has now been widened to 44 feet.
The widening is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on one of the key routes connecting Goregaon West Railway Station with Swami Vivekanand Road.
<h2>Relief for daily commuters</h2>
Thousands of commuters and local residents use the route every day. Civic officials believe the increased road width will provide smoother movement for vehicles and pedestrians, helping to ease bottlenecks in the busy station area.
The project is part of the BMC's ongoing efforts to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-crs-slum-demolition-clears-path-for-long-pending-kalwa-airoli-rail-corridor-23634757" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">transport connectivity across Mumbai</a>.
<h2>CR begins demolition work for long-pending Kalwa-Airoli rail link</h2>
The Central Railway earlier this month started the slum demolition for the Kalwa-Airoli rail corridor, which has been stranded for a decade. In the first phase, the authorities have razed about 150 slums.&nbsp;
The project, spanning 8 km, will facilitate a direct connection between Navi Mumbai and Kalyan. The new suburban railway corridor will also facilitate trans-harbour trains bypassing Thane station, taking off major load.
The work is divided into two phases. Phase I included building the Dighe Gaon station, which has been completed. Phase 2 includes work on the corridor.
Of the total stretch, the actual distance of the elevated rail link is just 3.3 km. The elevated link will enable direct trains from Vashi-Belapur to the Kalyan side.
The rail flyover has been planned with ballastless track and construction of an elevated Kalwa station, including platforms, booking offices, foot underbridges, and staircases.
As per data available, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-kalwa-airoli-rail-project-may-face-further-delays-due-to-slum-rehabilitation-concerns-23606361" rel="nofollow">Kalwa and Diva are the most accident-prone areas</a> on the CR due to a paucity of adequate public transport. In 2025 alone, 525 lives were lost due to falling from trains, and as many as 1188 commuters were injured in mishaps. The numbers include incidents taking place in Thane, Kalwa, Mumbra, Diva, and Airoli.
