Paws for first aid If you want to do something for the mutts of Mumbai, here&rsquo;s an event for you. The Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD) is conducting a half-day first-aid workshop for dog lovers on Sunday, June 8, at 10am at Girgaum, near Opera House.
It will be conducted by an animal behaviourist, a WSD veterinarian and WSD personnel, and will show how to handle and examine a dog, apply a bandage etc.
The WSD says any street-dog lover who wants to learn about basic first-aid for dogs can attend. Street dogs have no home to call their own, so this is why such a workshop is a great initiative. It&rsquo;s free but has limited capacity, so do call WSD on 64222838 or email wsdindia@gmail.com.
Nodding is possible The untimely drizzle in parts of the city might have come as a relief to some, but where there was no precipitation, there was continued perspiration.

Also as expected, the so-called rain was followed by high humidity and further high temperatures throughout. No wonder sleeping without sweating is nothing less than a task &mdash; at least for the unprivileged lot.
And in such a scenario who wouldn&rsquo;t want to sleep with the open sky above, especially when you&rsquo;re certain that it&rsquo;s not going to rain anyway?
The rave new way to travel While the inauguration of the 11.04-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro line is just a step away, we hear that the line, and its stations, will be smart and gleaming just like the metros and trains we see (in pictures) in other cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore.

Stations will have a similar range of food and other stalls as do our local train stations, but with a rather flashy difference. Stalls such as WH Smith might even give the stations the feel of an airport, a far cry from the plebeian AH Wheelers that dot the local landscape.
Not only will there be upmarket food stalls and gadget shops, there will also be ATM kiosks. Hmm, maybe people will prefer to stay on the station rather than travel&hellip;?
Painting the town green On Environment Day, it is common to see token gestures as well as grander initiatives towards eco-awareness.
(It is another matter that rampant tree-cutting and felling goes on the rest of the time, not to mention mangroves getting choked with garbage.) Amid all the tree-planting ceremonies it was heartening to see the next generation being given a sound grounding in environmental protection as well as an outlet for their artistic skills.

Mahim&rsquo;s PD Hinduja Hospital organised a drive yesterday in which children painted the wall opposite with pictures of trees, water, greenery and ecological messages. They were guided by teachers from the JJ School of Art.

The hospital termed it a tribute to Mother Nature and we hope the message is loud and clear environmental degradation spells the doom of all of us.
