A worthy Diwali celebration In the battle against a life-threatening illness, festivals acquire a whole new meaning. V Care Foundation, a voluntary support group that provides free assistance to cancer patients and their families, and which was founded by cancer survivor Vandana Gupta, recently organised Diwali celebrations for patients at the Tata Memorial Hospital.
The festivities were flagged off with a dinner hosted by the owners of a popular city restaurant and continued with a musical afternoon in the presence of some well-known TV personalities. Actor Shivaji Satam, too, spent some time with the patients. Now, that&rsquo;s the real spirit of Diwali.
Picture postcard penguin memories With penguins in the news for all the wrong reasons, here&rsquo;s a heartwarming penguin picture postcard memory from intrepid Mumbai traveller Meher Moos. Moos remembers the birds, &ldquo;like little restaurant waiters&rdquo; from her 1976-1977 journey to the Antarctica.

She says, &ldquo;They may waddle on land but they are superb, graceful swimmers. Their size belies their strength. One whack from their strong flippers, and you could break a bone, so we had to keep a safe distance.&rdquo; Moos also has a warm penguin mating story.
&ldquo;The male penguin drops a pebble near the female penguin. If she picks it up, she has accepted. They are then &lsquo;married,&rsquo; and they can mate,&rdquo; says Moos, who laughs &ldquo;they were throwing pebbles at our feet too, but we did not accept.&rdquo;
Moos has seen the Adelie penguin, the Chinstrap penguin, the Macaroni species of penguins in places like Chile, Argentina and Phillip Island in Melbourne, Australia. She finishes with, &ldquo;Antarctica, though, remains unparalleled. Seeing them slide on the ice, they can give an Olympic ice skater a run for his money, or medal.&rdquo;
No kidding An unusual kids&rsquo; wellness festival celebrating Children&rsquo;s Day will take place in the city on November 13. Organised by 360 The Wellness Concept, the idea is to challenge the belief that wellness is hard and boring. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s fun and addictive. Kids are born with innate traits like curiosity and fearlessness, which should be channelised to help them discover who they are,&rdquo; says Nipa Asharam who will co-organise the event.
The sessions include mom and kids pilates, Master Chef finalist Karishma Sakhrani talking about fun with food, child nutritionist Dhvani Shah, and Preeti Vyas, (author Amish Tripathi&rsquo;s wife and publisher) doing a special reading session for the kids. There will be workshops on how to become a radio jockey along with ones on urban farming, snow making, pottery, bottle painting, drumming and a special dance flash mob.
Go grape stomping in Bandra Who says you have to go all the way to Europe (or even Nashik, for that matter) to experience life on a vineyard? For two days (November 5 and 6), you can do it in your neighbourhood, because the Bandra Wine Festival is back with its sixth edition.

Once you&rsquo;re in, not only can you step into a tub filled with grapes and go stomping, but you will also get to sip on eight different wines &mdash; which you can pair with a variety of cheeses &mdash; and participate in a blind tasting contest to test your wine skills. To make things merrier, there will also be a live band and salsa workshops. Time to start planning that wine-filled weekend, we think.

The store, at Palladium in Lower Parel, promises to be a live confectionery theatre besides selling their unique flavours. You can witness the entire process, from mixing the colours and flavours to stretching and packaging the finished candy.
Their in-house candy makers can also assist you in designing the perfect candy. Think hard-rolled candy, fruit mix, sour mix, clouds (marshmallows), bubblets (jujubes), lollipops, print-a-pops, pillow candy, soft chews mix. This week, you can watch the candy maker from Spain, Luca Deregibus, at work.
