Make it a useful Sunday
Mumbaikars Shail Madlani and Aalisha Shah are using their Sundays to give back to those in need. The founders of a sustainable men’s innerwear brand, have started Good Deed Sunday; they have dedicated their Sundays to helping people around them, distributing essential items including snack boxes and chocolates. “We’ve spent the past few years trying to reduce our carbon footprint, but for us, sustainability is not limited to saving the environment. It also extends to the people who inhabit it,” said Madlani.
Ode to the golden voice

Prabodh Chandra Dey, popularly known as Manna, left an indelible impression on the music industry. Synonymous with the golden period of Hindi cinema, Dey’s work ranged from qawwalis to romantic tracks.
It’s his 102nd birth anniversary today, and tomorrow, the Mumbai Research Centre (MRC) of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai (ASM) is holding a tribute led by his disciple Shurjo Bhattacharya (inset). “Unlike our past events, this will be streamed live,” said Dr Shehernaz Nalwalla, chairperson, MRC. Today, on Maharashtra Day, Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum is organising an informative storytelling session for kids to celebrate the state. The event titled Folktales from Maharashtra will see researcher Dr Sherline Pimenta K, dressed in a Paithani saree, narrate a classic Marathi story — Bhoplyatli Mhatari (The Grandmother and the Pumpkin) with elements of song and drama. The story will be narrated in English and Marathi, so that non-Marathi speakers can be acquainted with the language. “I will also be talking about other iconic Maharashtrian traditions including wearing the Paithani . The storytelling session will be held for 15 minutes or so, following which I share interesting nuggets about the state and we will engage in an activity session, too,” she told this diarist. Children above the age of five and parents can register by emailing education@bdlmuseum.org.
Three woofs for this idea
New Zealand-based Indian artist and PhD student Anjali Krishna found an interesting way to help out with COVID-19 relief in India. The 27-year-old, who says she sketches dogs to beat anxiety, has put up her digital prints for sale, with all proceeds to be donated to different relief organisations in her home country.
“I decided to put my work up for sale recently because I was feeling helpless sitting here in New Zealand, and watching the devastation back home,” Krishna told this diarist. Check out her work on @theartherapawist.
An illustrated view of Hogwarts

We’ve got good news from Potterverse. Award-winning British illustrator Jim Kay, who was selected by JK Rowling to work on the colour illustrations of every title in the Harry Potter series, is coming out with a new title this year that makes for a perfect present for Potter fans. The gift book titled Harry Potter - A Magical Year is being published by Bloomsbury and will release in India on October 5. The title offers a peek into the artist’s sketchbook with unseen pencil sketches, coupled with preparatory pieces and colour illustrations. In addition to 366 quotations from the novels — one for every day of the year — each day will also feature an anniversary or memory from the series. However, don’t expect any new writing by Rowling in it. Of Kay, who won the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 2012, the publisher said, “His unique interpretation is both captivating and transporting — picture frozen icicles glinting on the snowy towers of Hogwarts, the dancing eyes of Professor Albus Dumbledore, or the infectious hustle and bustle of Diagon Alley.” Now, that’s one reason to save the date.
