For years now, the Juhu Reads group gather together every Saturday for a touch of quiet time with their favourite reads. Today, however, will be different. With the Diwali weekend upon us, the group will be taking on a new activity to add to their usual reading sessions at the Kaifi Azmi Park in Juhu.

“We’ll be gathering to host our usual silent reading session, but will also spend time to hand paint a few diyas, to design a lamp that is completely your own to take home for this celebration. We had done this last year as well, and it has become a fun, festive addition every year. Of course, the experience is completely voluntary,” co-curator Shishir Bangera told us.

Old traditions in a new world

This diarist was delighted to learn that Mumbai’s Gen Z is making the most of their Diwali holidays in their own way. Take 17-year-old Jay Patil from Girgaon, for instance, who gave us a throwback to a festive holiday activity from the good old days.

The collegian has built a 3 ft x 1.5 ft recreation of Suvarnadurg, the Maratha fort that became a strategic stronghold for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 1660s. While Patil has kept with the age-old tradition of honouring Maharashtra’s forts, a mix of cardboard and tissue paper was used to bring the fort to life, unlike the mud forts some of our readers might remember.

A member of the Patil family revealed that the young artist spent nearly 20 days planning, shaping, and finally painting the compact installation. Mumbai homes might not have sprawling courtyards to host these forts the old-school way, but trust Girgaon to make room for tradition.

A forest of stories

An artistic experience is brewing at Mahalaxmi. Opening the season for the Artist in Residence at G5A, theatremaker Jyoti Dogra has returned to the city to begin work on her next production, Darakht. The showcase will follow her last creation, Mezok, which was staged at the venue last year. For the more curious, the new work follows a woman through a forest, where unfamiliar paths unravel. With workshops ongoing, and a premiere scheduled for November 12, this one might be worth the wait.
