Dot’s in Riverdale

It was in September 2021 that this diarist had first noticed that director Zoya Akhtar was a fan of musician Dot’s work, after she commented on a video of the singer performing in a club at Cardiff. Aditi Saigal, who goes by the moniker Dot, shot to fame with the simple, but genius song, Everybody dances to techno. Zoya’s love for Dot has resulted in casting her in the Netflix movie, The Archies, based on the famous gang from Riverdale. The daughter of the Rock Street Journal legend Amit Saigal has been cast alongside industry kids such as Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor and Suhana Khan. We wonder what’s Dot’s role— the lead singer of the Pussycats? Let’s wait and watch.
Wisden gets them in the picture

Covid-19 played a part in the Obituaries section of the recently-released Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack 2022 stretching to 79 pages. Yes, cricket lovers would undoubtedly want to see less number of entries and tributes, but it’s heartening to note that Wisden, acclaimed as the Bible of cricket, also includes media persons in their Obituaries section. For example, this diarist found a mention of photographer Vivek Bendre, who passed away in April 2021. Similarly, West Indian lensman Gordon Brooks, who bid goodbye last June. And the late Jagganadha Rao, the former sports editor of Press Trust of India, has been mentioned for breaking the news of Pakistan forces surrendering to the Indian army in 1971. Well done, Wisden!
The restaurateur on wheels

The Mandlik Road bungalow that housed the iconic Indigo finally has a new tenant. Colaba gets a modern luxe restaurant called Neuma at the address, by Suved Lohia, who is behind Pink Wasabi, Game Palacio and Ammata. The villa offers outdoor as well as indoor seating and saw a launch recently while interestingly, it’s promoter was off on a biking trip with his buddies, referredto as #euriobiketrip2022 on Instagram. He hear Lohia has been joined by Shahid Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter and Kunal Kemmu, who have already travelled to Comps, Provence-Alpes- Cote D’Azur in France.
Panjim to host festival of ideas

One-sixty-one years ago, Goan polymath Francisco Luis Gomes wrote an impassioned plea for freedom and enlightenment in an extended exchange of letters with Alphonse de Lamartine, the foremost European intellectual of the day: “I was born in India, once the cradle of poetry, philosophy and history and now their tomb... But this nation which made codes of its poems and formulated politics in a game is no longer alive! It survives imprisoned in its own country. I demand liberty and light for India.” This statement of purpose illuminates the first edition of the Liberty and Light Festival of Goa, which will be held at the Adil Shah Palace in Panjim from May 28 to 31, culminating on the 193rd birth anniversary of Gomes. The community festival of ideas will feature some of the finest talent from Goa and beyond. The lineup includes Damodar Mauzo, Manu Pillai, Dolly Thakore, Jerry Pinto, Orijit Sen, Meena Kandasamy among others. The inaugural edition will also focus on the entire strand of Goa’s anti-colonial resistance, right from 1510 to Operation Vijay in 1961.
Healthy food mela comes to Nashik
Eat Right Mela, a government-backed outreach programme to build awareness on safe food and healthy diets through an interactive and informative model, recently made its way to Nashik. The two-day festival organised by statutory body Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at the foothills of Hatgad Fort in Surgana taluka, aimed at consumer awareness, and was part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. “The activities included demonstration of food safety, indigenous/tribal food, benefits of fortified rice and consumer awareness,” FSSAI tweeted on Saturday morning with a series of pictures. The district is also home to late freedom fighter Shripad Amrut Dange, a founding member of the Communist Party of India and a stalwart of the trade union movement. It’s the reason Nashik was selected for the festival.
