Of Maa and Mamata A few days back, we stumbled upon a piece of news that went viral, claiming that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be &ldquo;worshipped&rdquo; by one group of supporters alongside goddess Durga.

This was at Prantik, a club in Nadia district in south Bengal that placed a life-size replica of the Chief Minister inside the main pandal behind the goddess. Amusing, we thought, though it didn&rsquo;t come as too much of a shock.
When this diarist visited Kolkata a few days before the Durga puja madness hit the city, she was overwhelmed by the life-size cut outs and posters that lined the streets, particularly near the airport.
In a trend that bears resemblance to Amma&rsquo;s presence across Tamil Nadu, the one in Kolkata also had Didi belting out traditonal shlokas like, Ya devi sarva bhuteshu shakti rupena sangsthitha (a Sanskrit shloka dedicated to Goddess Durga) on loudspeakers. While the pujas have come to an end, we suspect the megalomania is far from over.
