Mumbai: Doctors sound alarm over uptick in cases of ‘Covid-19 diabetes’

The indiscriminate use of steroids to treat Covid-19, stress and the virus’s effect on pancreas is making patients’ blood sugar levels shoot up, cases have particularly increased in the past two weeks

While Mumbai is known for the high number of diabetics, Covid-19 and its treatment are leading to a further jump in cases. City doctors are seeing in what they term as ‘Covid-19 diabetes’.

Rita Das, 61, a Mulund resident, was surprised when doctors treating her for Covid-19 said she has uncontrolled blood sugar levels and put her on insulin. Das was diabetes-free before Covid-19.
