After refusing to file a complaint against the constable who had threatened to implicate a garage owner in a car theft case unless he was paid Rs 7 lakh, the police have finally registered an FIR against the accused.

A day after mid-day repo-rted about Constable Shashi Yadav&rsquo;s (inset) alleged attempt to extort money from the garage owner Vijaykumar Huvinbai, the Shivaji Park police called the victim and registered the case. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against Yadav, who is attached to the Pydhonie police station.

DCP (Zone V) Mahesh Patil said, &ldquo;An FIR has been registered against Shashi Bhushan Yadav under Section 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code. We will investigate the matter and verify all the evidence, including the ownership of the car.&rdquo;
Yadav had given his Swift Dzire car for repair to Huvinbai in December. On January 25, Yadav called the garage owner saying his car had been stolen from the garage and demanded R7 lakh from him. According to the complainant, the cop threatened that if he did not pay the money, he will implicate him in the case.
On January 27, Huvinbai recovered a CCTV footage of Yadav driving away with his car. Huvinbai approached Shivaji Park police station, where he alleged that he and Yadav were just made to sit and then told to go home after recording his statement. mid-day had reported about it on Monday.
The next day, Huvinbai was called by senior police officials to Shivaji Park police station, to register the case against Yadav. &ldquo;This is all because of the mid-day report and the CCTV footage. After the story was reported in your paper, I received calls from several cops and politicians telling me to back off, but I refused. I hope the police takes stringent action against Yadav,&rdquo; said Huvinbai.
Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (south), said, &ldquo;Once we receive the investigation report, if Yadav is found guilty, we will take tough action against him.&rdquo;
