In a very unfortunate incident at a one-plus-one chawl in Cuffe Parade, a devastating fire broke out during the early hours of Monday. The fire incident has left one person dead and three others injured.

As reported by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the incident occurred at Captain Prakash Pethe Marg, Shivshakti Nagar, Machhimar Nagar 03, and was first reported at 4:15 am.

According to authorities, the fire was confined to electric wiring, installations, and three electric vehicle batteries, along with some household articles, within an area measuring approximately 10 x 10 feet on the first floor of the structure.

In view of taking the situation under control, the BMC’s MFB, along with police personnel, BEST staff, and 108 ambulance services, were immediately mobilised to contain the blaze. While the fire was successfully extinguished by 4:35 am, the destruction was done at a fairly massive scale.

Tragically, 15-year-old Yash Vitthal Khot succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire. Whereas, three others, namely Devendra Choudhary (30), Viraj Khot (13), and Sangram Kurne (25), were rushed to St George Hospital following the burns.

As per the hospital’s Resident Medical Officer (RMO), Devendra Choudhary is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and undergoing treatment, while Viraj Khot and Sangram Kurne are in stable condition.

Police have cordoned off the site, and forensic teams are expected to assess the cause of the fire in detail. Local residents have expressed shock and grief over the incident, highlighting concerns about safety measures in older chawl structures.

Fire broke out after Diwali rocket entered a shop in Borivli

Earlier on Saturday, a major fire broke out on Shimpoli Road in Borivli West late at night after a rocket accidentally landed inside a mirror shop, gutting three shops completely and destroying property worth several lakhs of rupees.

According to police and fire officials, the incident occurred around 11.30 pm when the rocket flew into Vadgama House, a structure housing several small shops. The fire spread rapidly through adjoining units before locals and fire brigade personnel managed to bring it under control.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. Police and fire officials are now investigating how the rocket landed on the shop’s roof. “The shops had covered their roofs with tarpaulin for rain protection. Locals told me they saw a rocket fall onto the roof, sparking the fire. It’s impossible to find who exactly was responsible, but a single rocket has caused such a huge loss,” Khan said.
