Amidst all the hue and cry over the implementation of the GST and what the added tax could mean for the average consumer, a new piece of news has shocked many.
As per reports after the implementation of GST from July 1, motorists will have to pay an additional three percent tax to get back their towed or ceased cars and two-wheelers.&nbsp; As per a report in <a title="Towing charges" href="http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report-motorists-to-pay-more-in-towing-charges-2491340" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">DNAindia</a>, the traffic police have started levying an 18% tax on towing charges , that have to be borne by the motorist.
As of now, the police say that they have only started levying a higher tax on cars that are towed, since it is a service provided by the towing company. This is in stark contrast to the 15% tax charged earlier, which is now being replaced by the 9% state GST and 9% central GST charges.
In a statement, Ashok Dudhe, Deputy Commissioner of Police said, "No tax would be applicable on e-challans for parking violations, but the towing company which was already charging the service tax would replace it with GST."
This move does not sit well with motorists who feel cheated for having to pay charges for the parking violation and inflated taxes. According to Kaushal Bhai Patel, resident of Dahisar, "My car was towed from Goregaon area. When I went to collect the car, they charged 18 per cent GST instead of 15 per cent tax. We are already paying extra money than the fine of the violation. It's too much."
