Lady Luck seems to have turned her back on an HSC student. The pupil, who had applied for re-evaluation of answersheets in the hope that it would result in an increase in scores, has instead ended up failing the paper.

After the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) decided to accept applications from students to verify as well as re-evaluate board answersheets, thousands had sent in their papers to be re-assessed.
For this student, it has turned out to be a nightmare.
&ldquo;We usually end up giving up to 10 grace marks to students and I believe this student ended up failing in the subject that he had passed in previously, even after we added the grace marks,&rdquo; said Laxmikant Pande, chairman of the Mumbai division board.
He added that the student seems to have failed in only one subject, so he can clear the same in the October examination session. He, however, refused to divulge any other information about this student.
Pande added that the re-evaluation process is still on. Till date, the Mumbai division has received 10,935 applications from HSC students for photocopy of answersheets, and 857 and 6,115 applications for re-evaluation as well as verification (counting marks again). 69 students who had failed earlier, were declared passed. Among SSC students, only six such cases were observed. The board received 7,282 applications for photocopies of SSC answersheets this year and 243 and 4,820 applications for re-evaluation as well as verification.
Delayed process Students are angry that the rechecking is taking so long. &ldquo;I sent my marks for verification after I heard of a girl from another college whose internals&rsquo; marks hadn&rsquo;t been included in the final score. I had to wait four weeks to know there were no errors in my score,&rdquo; said Shaili Singh, an HSC student.
&ldquo;My daughter waited six weeks just to get hold of the photocopy of her answersheet. By the time her own teacher assessed the photocopy and re-sent the answer sheet to the board, she had already secured admission in a college.
What&rsquo;s the use of this facility if students can&rsquo;t get their re-assessed marks before admissions to colleges begin?&rdquo; asked Rakesh Shetye, father of an SSC student.
The board chairman stated that the process is getting delayed because Mumbai division has one of the largest populations of students appearing for SSC as well as HSC exams in the state.
&ldquo;We agree that the other divisions have already finished this process but that&rsquo;s because they received very few applications. We have a large chunk of students appearing for exams every year, and the entire process of providing photocopies as well as re-evaluating answersheets is lengthy. But, we are ensuring that all students who applied for the same will not be left in the lurch,&rdquo; said Pande, adding that the remaining applications should be cleared within the next couple of weeks.
