Every year, thousands of goats and buffaloes are brought to this abattoir before they get slaughtered. Here the buyer and seller trade only those goats that are approved by the BMC as healthy.
Normally, at several slum pockets such as in Govandi, Bandra (East), Jogeshwari and others, people slaughter the animal on the roads or in building compounds, causing distress to other residents. Some housing societies do, however, use plastic sheets to prevent blood spattering on walls. This year the BMC wants proper procedures to be followed by everyone.
The Deonar Abattoir is expecting 1-1.25 lakh goats to be kept in their sheds this year. Sources said that this number is lower than usual, which is 2 lakh goats.
The Deonar abattoir has 40,000 square metres of permanent space in a shed where the goats are kept for sale.
"We have created an additional 35,000 square metres for these goats. We expect around 1.25 lakh goats to come to the abattoir," said Dr Yogesh Shetye, General Manager, Deonar Abattoir.
Sources said that this year because of floods in the northern states, the number of livestock, namely goats and sheep, has come down. Usually, around 2 lakh goats are kept at the Deonar abattoir during the festival. Among the other guidelines is that goats should be transported in proper vehicles rather than just dumping them.
Officials said when people take the goats back home from the abattoir they are inhumanely treated. The BMC has also stated that the slaughter area &mdash; be it inside the society or a common place where slaughter takes place &mdash; be thoroughly cleaned. The BMC will also be providing small and large compactors at designated locations throughout Mumbai to dispose of the animal waste, and have urged people to throw waste into regular dustbins.
