A new staircase on the western side of the south <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-closed-fob-and-unsafe-access-leave-reay-road-commuters-struggling-for-a-safe-passage-23657796" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Foot Over Bridge (FOB)</a> at Prabhadevi railway station in central Mumbai has been completed and opened to the public, an official statement said on Sunday.
It will provide Mumbai railway commuters with improved access to the station's platform and ease the movement during peak hours.
The staircase was constructed within 80 days of receiving the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The project is expected to improve passenger convenience by providing an additional access point and reducing congestion at the station, officials said.
<h2>Removal of BMC toilet block paved the way</h2>
According to the railways, the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-western-railway-closes-mira-road-station-fob-staircase-amid-station-work-23657232" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">construction work</a> began after the existing BMC toilet block at the site was dismantled. The additional staircase was subsequently constructed and completed within the stipulated period.
The new facility is expected to facilitate smoother entry and exit, particularly during peak hours, while improving the overall movement of commuters at Prabhadevi station, it said.
<h2>Challenging conditions during construction</h2>
The project faced several challenges, including restricted working space, limited working hours and the presence of underground utilities.
The construction site was located between a road on one side and railway tracks on the other, leaving little space for construction activities, machinery movement and storage of materials.
Officials said that the working hours were also restricted as <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-prabhadevi-stations-wider-fob-entry-eases-access-but-narrow-stairs-remain-a-bottleneck-23650180" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">night-time construction</a> was not permitted due to residential buildings in the vicinity. As a result, the work had to be carried out within limited daytime hours, the statement said.
<h2>Underground cables and water pipelines posed challenges</h2>
The presence of several underground electrical and utility cables required careful identification and protection to prevent damage and ensure uninterrupted services.
Existing water supply pipelines also obstructed construction activities, requiring additional precautions and coordination to ensure their safety.
Despite these constraints, the project was completed within the stipulated 80-day period through careful planning, coordination and sustained efforts by <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/vikhroli-fob-reopens-after-delay-bringing-relief-to-commuters-23636102" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">railway officials</a> and the executing agency, it said.
The opening of the additional staircase is expected to improve passenger circulation and provide much-needed relief from congestion at Prabhadevi station, said the officials.
