The Western Railway on Wednesday announced that it will introduce more 15-coach and <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-mid-days-ac-local-plan-gets-thumbs-up-from-commuters-23246583" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai AC local trains</a> from May 1, 2026.
The expansion of its suburban services across Mumbai is aimed at improving passenger comfort and capacity, officials said.
From May 1, 2026, 17 existing 12-coach non-AC local trains will be upgraded to 15-coach services, while 12 additional air-conditioned (AC) local services will also be introduced, an official statement said.
With the upgrade, the total number of 15-coach suburban trains will increase from 227 to 244.
For the first time, eight 15-coach services will operate on the Virar-Dahanu Road section, offering greater capacity and convenience for <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/post-pandemic-shift-boosts-earnings-on-western-railway-as-commuters-opt-for-ac-locals-despite-lower-footfall-23624448" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">commuters travelling on this busy stretch</a>.
<h2>Double halt at Dadar</h2>
However, due to operational constraints, these longer trains will not halt at Grant Road, Charni Road and Marine Lines stations in either direction. They will instead have a double halt at Dadar platform number 4.
"The Western Railway will upgrade 17 existing 12-coach non-AC services to 15-coach services, thereby increasing the number of 15-coach services from 227 to 244. Of these, 8 services will be introduced in the Virar-Dahanu Road section for the first time, providing additional <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/bullet-train-project-railway-minister-ashwini-vaishnaw-shares-bullet-train-plan-for-south-india-says-it-will-transform-connectivity-23627894" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">carrying capacity and improved convenience</a> to commuters of this section. Further, due to operational reasons, the 15-coach local services will not halt at Grant Road, Charni Road and Marine Lines stations in both directions. Also, these trains will take double halt at Dadar, Platform No. 4," the statement issued by Vineet Abhishek said.

<h2>Increase in Mumbai AC local trains</h2>
The railway will also introduce 12 additional 12-coach AC local services by converting existing non-AC services.
This will raise the total number of AC trains from 133 to 145 on weekdays and 106 to 118 on weekends.
The statement said that the move is aimed at offering more comfortable travel options, especially during peak hours.
<h2>No change in total services</h2>
The statement said that despite the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/pm-modi-inaugurates-594-kilometre-six-lane-ganga-expressway-in-uttar-pradesh-23628019" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">upgrades and additions</a>, the overall number of suburban services on the network will remain unchanged.
Some minor adjustments in timings of a few trains are expected.
According to Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek, the changes are designed to enhance commuter convenience without disrupting the existing schedule significantly.
