A 32-year-old man was dragged on the bonnet of a moving car for nearly 5–6 km — from Mumbai international airport to Jogeshwari late Tuesday night. During the terrifying ride, the cab driver allegedly shouted at the victim, Aslam Pathan, “Jump off or I’ll kill you.” The accused has been identified as Bheem Prasad Mahto, a cab driver. Police have registered an FIR and issued a notice to Mahto. The complaint was filed by Pathan’s friend, Justin D’Souza, a resident of Kalyan.

Speaking to mid-day, Pathan said, “I’m also a cab driver. The airport authorities have designated a parking area for pick-up and drop-offs. I had parked my car inside when my friend Justin D’Souza tried to enter the parking lot. Suddenly, another cab driver, Bheem Mahto, attempted to overtake him in a narrow lane.” D’Souza added, “Mahto began abusing me and, after parking his car, struck me on the head with his car key.

I started bleeding. Two other cab drivers, Aslam, Sibu, and Subhash Pawar, rushed to help me. Mahto then got into his vehicle and tried to flee. We tried to stop him, but he wouldn’t stop.” Pathan continued, “When I tried to block his vehicle, he hit me, and I landed on the bonnet. Instead of stopping, he drove off and dragged me from the airport to the Jogeshwari flyover. I kept begging him to stop, but he didn’t listen. On the way, he hit an auto-rickshaw, another car, and narrowly missed a biker.”

“He shouted at me twice, ‘Jump off or I’ll kill you.’ I clung to the wipers in fear. I was terrified for my life. I lost my father during COVID, and I’ve just started a new life with my wife. All I could think about was surviving,” he told mid-day. Pathan said, “A biker riding alongside began recording the incident. I screamed that this wasn’t a stunt and begged him to help me, saying I might die. He tried to stop the car, and eventually, the driver halted in Jogeshwari on the Western Express Highway.”

Pathan and the biker managed to detain Mahto and took him to the Jogeshwari police station. They also contacted the police helpline. However, since the incident originated in the jurisdiction of the Airport police station, they were redirected there. Senior Inspector Madhukar Sanap of the Airport police station told mid-day, “Mahto claimed he panicked when the victim’s friends gathered, fearing they would attack him. In his panic, he locked the doors and drove off, even as Pathan clung to the bonnet. Instead of stopping, he continued driving along the Western Express Highway.”

“We have registered an FIR under Sections 281, 125, 126(2), 115(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. A notice has been served to the accused to appear for investigation,” Sanap added.
