The Dindoshi police have arrested a 26-year-old who allegedly stole two-wheelers from various localities to impress his girlfriend by taking her on daily joyrides on a different bike. According to investigators, once the petrol ran out, the accused, Sadique Khurshid Shaikh, would abandon a stolen vehicle wherever it stopped and move on to the next one. The matter came to light after a complaint was registered on January 9, regarding the theft of a Honda Activa 5G from the Film City Road in Goregaon East.

Dindoshi Police registered an offence under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and launched a detailed probe. Following instructions from Mahesh Chimate, DCP, Zone XII and under the guidance of Senior Inspector Mahendra Shinde, PSI Ajit Desai, along with his detection team, analysed CCTV footage, gathered inputs from informants, and used technical surveillance to zero in on the accused, who was arrested on February 5.

In the course of Shaikh’s interrogation, the Dindoshi police recovered three stolen two-wheelers worth R1.10 lakh, solving three bike theft cases registered at the Dindoshi and Kurar police stations.

“Shaikh has no parents and was living with his two sisters in Kurar’s Tanaji Nagar. However, the women were deeply troubled by his repeated involvement in thefts and his addiction to drugs. Despite admitting him to rehabilitation centres several times, Shaikh allegedly returned to the same habits after his release each time. Frustrated and helpless, his sisters eventually forced him to leave the house, said an officer from Dindoshi police.

According to police sources, Shaikh has more than half a dozen theft cases registered against him at the Kurar and Dindoshi police stations, all related to two-wheeler theft. Earlier, his sisters had helped him secure bail once or twice, but as his behaviour did not change, they stopped supporting him legally. As a result, whenever he was arrested thereafter, he served his sentence and was released. Police said he has already served sentences in seven cases.

Modus operandi

A police officer said, “The accused would steal motorcycles, roam around on them, and take his girlfriend for joy rides. Whenever the fuel ran out, he would abandon the bike at that spot and walk away. He committed these thefts mainly to project a flashy lifestyle, hoping to win admiration and attention.”
