Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Tuesday inspected city entry points after Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) plans to have landmark gates and civic facilities at checkposts in the city.

Tawde on Tuesday visited the city’s entry points at Vashi Naka, Airoli Naka and Mulund Naka to review plans for constructing iconic gateway structures and civic amenity complexes, according to an official statement.

It said that the inspection was carried out to speed up the proposed project aimed at creating landmark entry gates and clock towers that reflect the identity and culture of the city.

During her visit, the mayor said the project would not be limited to building decorative arches. Instead, the plan is to develop concept-based gateways representing Mumbai’s social, cultural and economic identity.

She added that the gateways should give visitors, tourists and citizens entering the city would get a distinct sense of Mumbai.

Earlier, a similar site inspection had been carried out at Dahisar Naka, another major entry point into the city.

Integrated civic facilities planned

Along with the gateway structures at the check entry-points, the Mumbai civic body plans to develop comprehensive public facility complexes near these locations.

The proposed facilities may include -

- Green spaces and gardens

- Vehicle parking areas

- Separate air-conditioned toilets for men and women

- Resting areas for travellers

- Spaces for local vendors, fisherfolk communities and women’s self-help groups

- Digital advertising boards

- Solar power installations

The officials said that the project aims not only to improve civic amenities but also to generate long-term revenue for the municipal corporation.

Meeting of departments to accelerate proposal

The statement further said that the mayor directed the civic administration to prepare a detailed proposal within a defined timeline. A joint meeting with all concerned departments and agencies will be held soon to move the project forward.

Officials from various departments and agencies, including the forest department, road development authorities and planning bodies, were present during the site inspection.

The BMC plans to construct similar gateway complexes at four major entry routes into Mumbai, giving the city prominent architectural landmarks at its borders.
