While Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar gave a statement to the media that vaccines will be given to the corporators from March 1, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration said that no such guidelines have been received from the government so far. The mayor’s statement came while talking to the press on Friday, against the backdrop of a Sena corporator demanding that the vaccine be given even to the public representatives.

Pednekar said, “I have registered myself with the civic body and submitted the necessary documents and from March 1, public representatives will also be given the vaccine shots.” However, a senior BMC official clarified stating, “The names are being registered under the category of senior citizens and people with co-morbidities for the third phase. As majority of the corporators fall in the category of over 50, they will be eligible to be administered the shot. But there are no specific instructions received to give shots to the public representatives and even the dates for the third phase have not yet been communicated to us.”

The BMC had expected a turnout of 7,300 frontline workers out of which 6,255 turned up on Friday. The total number of frontline workers administered the jabs is 55,305 in the past two weeks. In the case of health workers, the civic body is struggling to attract larger numbers and Friday’s turnout was no different. Out of the 3,000 expected beneficiaries, 1,665 came and of these health workers, 789 took the second doses. The total number of health workers given the vaccine shots is 1,00,053, since January 16.
