The Mumbai Metro Line-3 station at Hutatma Chowk has been designed with an open-to-air entry/exit concept.
The design of the Hutatma Chowk Metro Station has been carefully planned to respect the heritage character of DN Road and its iconic landmarks, including Flora Fountain and the Hutatma Chowk Memorial.
To preserve the visual and architectural integrity of this historic precinct, all the station structures, except for lift shafts and some ventilation systems, have been constructed entirely underground. The entry/exit points are open to the sky, designed using stone and glass to visually blend with the surroundings. These have been developed without canopies, in line with global best practices in heritage zones.
The escalators are designed for full outdoor use, with systems in place for rainwater drainage and flood prevention, ensuring commuter safety at all times. The design has been developed in consultation with heritage architects and has received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee.
Mumbai Metro opens retail, commercial spaces on Lines 2A and 7 to boost non-fare revenue
The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) has launched a tender inviting bids for retail and commercial spaces across Metro Lines 2A and 7, as part of its strategy to strengthen Non-Fare Box Revenue (NFBR) streams. The initiative aims to enhance the financial sustainability of Mumbai Metro while maintaining affordable, high-quality services for commuters.
Under the request for proposal (RFP), a total of 68,166 sq ft of commercial space across 30 stations is being offered, including 472 kiosks and 25 block spaces, with 497 kiosks and blocks currently available for licensing. The license period has been set at five years for kiosks and 15 years for block spaces.
With weekday ridership already exceeding 3.3 lakh passengers, these retail and commercial spaces offer businesses a unique opportunity to engage with a large commuter base directly within the metro network.
The tender opened on September 16 at 12 pm and will accept submissions until 4 pm on October 29 via the portal, mahatenders.gov.in.
MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner and MMMOCL Chairman Sanjay Mukherjee said that Mumbai Metro is not just a transport solution but a catalyst for economic vibrancy.
"By monetising retail and commercial potential within stations, we are actively raising funds through non-fare revenue avenues. This ensures the Metro remains world-class and financially robust, while passengers continue to enjoy affordable travel. These NFBR initiatives directly support our vision of creating Metro stations that are vibrant hubs of convenience, commerce, and connectivity,” he added.
