The considerate Metro authorities want to make sure that the construction of new lines does not derail traffic on the road, but first, they want to spend Rs 70 lakh on the purchase of walkie-talkies. According to the official, this will help the personnel to communicate and coordinate the traffic better.
This comes close on the heels of another costly decision by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which plans to spend close to Rs 5 crore on traffic management related material, including signage along the Metro routes from Dahisar East to Andheri East (along the Western Express Highway), and Dahisar to DN Nagar (New Link Road). On September 13, mid-day had reported on MMRDA&rsquo;s plan (MMRDA to spend R5 crore to direct traffic).
Traffic bottlenecks The Dahisar East to Andheri East, and Dahisar to DN Nagar Metro lines will go via the arterial WEH and New Link Road in western suburbs, which are used by over 50,000 motorists on a daily basis. The construction of both the lines will take place at the same time, creating a traffic jam at many locations. The authorities don&rsquo;t want more chaos due to the work and want to ensure that the traffic management is done in a proper manner.
An MMRDA official said, &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t want motorists using the Metro alignment route to face any inconvenience and we want a proper traffic management plan in place, hence we are working towards the same. We will also have people who will have wireless equipment like walkie-talkies and walkie-talkie repeaters monitoring the traffic movement along the corridor.&rdquo;
MMRDA has also invited tenders worth Rs 35 lakh each, to provide, supply and maintain the wireless equipment.
PAPs to be shifted Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) on Tuesday completed the allotment of tenements by a computerised lottery system for the 327 families from Naya Nagar, Mahim, who will be affected during the construction of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor.
The Naya Nagar land will be used for a Tunnel Boring Machine launching shaft. Out of the 327 affected, 298 are residential, 18 are commercial and 11 are residential-cum-commercial places. The residential and residential-cum- commercial units will be shifted to Kurla Premium area in Kurla-West, and the commercial units will be shifted to Gautam Nagar, Govandi, next week.
&ldquo;In all, 2,807 units on the corridor will be affected as the construction of Metro-3 corridor progresses. However, keeping all social, societal, and moral responsibilities alive; MMRC will make sure that all the affected families and units are resettled before the actual construction begins,&rdquo; said Maya Patole, deputy collector (Resettlement and Rehabilitation), MMRC.
&ldquo;The lottery system used is computerised, which makes the entire process transparent. We are also open to having community development programmes for the project affected,&rdquo; said Ashwini Bhide, managing director, MMRC.
