Minister Sarnaik added that once the notification is issued, the process of selecting a new site will be expedited.

Maharashtra government has decided to cancel the proposed metro car shed project in the Dongri area of Mira-Bhayandar area of Thane district in Maharashtra, with an official notification expected shortly, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced on Monday.

The decision comes after sustained opposition from local residents, environmental concerns, and technical issues related to land use.

Sarnaik announced during a review meeting at the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) headquarters. The meeting was attended by Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwin Kumar Mudgal, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Commissioner Radha Binod Sharma, journalist and environmental activist Dhiraj Parab, and other officials.

The proposed car shed required a large tract of land, which would have led to tree felling, traffic congestion, and disruption of local development plans. Residents, civic groups, and environmental organisations had raised multiple objections. After reviewing these concerns, the government concluded that exploring alternative sites would be more appropriate.

Minister Sarnaik added that once the notification is issued, the process of selecting a new site will be expedited, with planning underway to ensure the metro project stays on schedule.

The decision has been welcomed by Dongri residents and environmental activists, who praised the government for prioritising both citizen welfare and environmental protection.
