Due to a policy shift on doors, a major issue of passengers running to catch trains and slipping might get fixed, as the railways are trying to shift to automatic door-closing trains. Mumbai’s first smart Rajdhani Express with such door-closing and other advanced features began its journey to New Delhi on Monday evening.

The train, manufactured by the Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli, will not move till all the doors are shut. This way it will ensure only authorised passengers get in, and deter hawkers and other outsiders, as and when the doors close.

In addition to this, the train has enhanced security features with six cameras in every coach and emergency talkback facility like Metros.

“A new era of train travel experience with enhanced comfort is being rolled out by Western Railway with the introduction of the newly upgraded Tejas sleeper coach rakes,” Western Railway’s chief spokesperson Sumit Thakur said.

“It is equipped with the Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit (PICCU) provided with GSM network connectivity, which reports to the remote server. The PICCU will record the data of Wheel Slide Protection (WSP), CCTVs, and has toilet odour sensors, panic switch and other items integrated with fire detection and alarm system, air quality and choke filter sensor and energy meter,” he said
