The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) on Thursday evening said that a total of 1,56,456 passengers travelled on the Aarey JVLR to Cuffe Parade route of Mumbai Metro Line 3 on Thursday, October 9, officials said.

The much-anticipated Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, kicked off on Thursday, marking a significant move in Mumbai’s local travelling landscape. With the start of Mumbai’s first underground metro, the services also witnessed a strong start on their inaugural day and grabbed significant attention from commuters across the city.Mumbai Metro Line 3, or the Aqua Line, connects key residential and commercial hubs and promises to reduce travel time and ease congestion on Mumbai’s crowded roads. A great asset for connecting South Mumbai with the suburbs, the Aqua Line Metro has been a real pain reliever for all Mumbaikars.

Earlier on Thursday, it was also reported that the Vidhan Bhavan Metro station was closed for some time due to overcrowding. However, the station was reopened just after a few minutes. Soon after the station was reopened, the crowd was eventually accommodated. An official statement on Thursday highlighting the issue at CSMT station stated that, "During the evening peak hours, passenger turnout was exceptionally high at Vidhan Bhavan station. To ensure smooth crowd movement and maintain safety, one of the seven entry gates at a station was temporarily closed for approximately 10 minutes. The situation was promptly managed by our on-ground staff and security teams."

The third and final phase of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 was inaugurated on Wednesday, October 8, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi, while virtually inaugurating the third and the final phase of the Aqua Line metro, said that connectivity is essential for a city's growth.

PM Modi, while praising the opening of Phase 2B of Mumbai Metro Line 3, asserted that this is surely a very big step for the city's infrastructure and public transport.

While posting on social media platform X, PM Modi said that “this new metro stretch would greatly help improve connectivity and quality of life in Mumbai”.

The Prime Minister further added that metro systems are important for a city’s growth and this project would benefit the whole Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
