The Prime Minister&rsquo;s announcement on November 8 inadvertently brought to light a crime at a home in Kandivali.
A 16-year-old FYJC student had allegedly given her family&rsquo;s cash and jewellery worth Rs 3.80 lakh to her boyfriend, a 17-year-old SYJC student, after he had allegedly raped her and was blackmailing her for a year. The police have arrested the boy.
The crime came to light on November 9, when the girl&rsquo;s mother went to check how many of the old high-value notes she had in the cupboard locker, following the PM&rsquo;s announcement about the demonetisation. When she found everything missing, she raised an alarm and the 16-year-old told her that she had taken the money.
The girl told the family that in July, last year, the boy had become intimate with her after promising marriage. He then started blackmailing her, threatening to put nude pictures of her online. Fearing disgrace, the girl stole cash and jewellery from her house and gave it to him.
The girl&rsquo;s mother took her to the Malwani police, who registered a case the same day. &ldquo;As the boy is a minor, he has been sent to the Dongri remand home,&rdquo; said PSI R Bhandari from Kurar police station.
