Two unoccupied residential buildings collapsed here today due to heavy rains, a civic official said.

The buildings, located in Maharashtra Nagar Mhada Colony, were constructed in 1995 and their occupants vacated the structures in 2010 to pave the way for its redevelopment, Santosh Kadam, in-charge of the Regional Disaster Management Cell at the Thane Municipal Corporation, said.

Forty families were living in the buildings before they were marked for redevelopment which is yet to start, he said. The buildings came down crashing this morning due to heavy rains lashing the city for the last three days, Kadam said.
