Chief minister inaugurates third arm of Kalanagar flyover that will help motorists avoid congestion at the busy intersection; Thackeray also launches a 2,200-bed Covid-19 hospital at Malad

Mumbai: Now, travel non-stop from Worli to BKC

The two-lane bridge will reduce travel time between Worli and BKC by at least 10 minutes

Motorists going from Worli towards BKC via the Sea Link will no longer have to face traffic at Kalanagar junction, with the government throwing open a two-lane flyover that will take them directly to the destination.

The second arm of the Kalanagar overpass, built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday.  At 804 metres, this is the longest arm of this three-direction flyover at Kalanagar.

The roads from Western Expressway, Bandra-Worli Sea Link/S V Road, Sion/Dharavi Road, BKC Road and two thoroughfares intersect at Kalanagar, causing massive snarls. While the Kalanagar flyover has already reduced congestion at the intersection, the new bridge will further ease the commute between the island city and western suburbs. Motorists will save at least 10 minutes on this stretch.

The original cost of the project was Rs 163 crore. However, owing to works on Metro Line-2B, some scope of the flyover was curtailed and the cost was revised to about Rs 104 crore.

2,200-bed Covid-19 hospital

The CM also inaugurated a 2,200-bed Covid-19 hospital at Malad built by MMRDA. “Some people might ask what was the need to set up another field hospital at Malad when Covid-19 cases are decreasing but I want to remind them that the first Covid-19 field hospital in the county was set up at BKC and that too in a record time.

With the cooperation of people and our doctors, we have managed to bring the second wave down but we all have to stay alert. If we don’t take proper precautions and we don’t avoid crowding then the number of patients in the second wave can increase again and during such times our field hospitals will be very helpful.”

The hospital can accommodate child patients as well. The CM said, “I pray to god that this new hospital remains empty and at the same time I appeal to the people that they should take all the necessary precaution.”
