In a bid to revive the lost glory of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT) building, the Central Railway (CR) on Friday kick-started phase II of the restoration work with a site inspection along with the officials of the Indian National Trust and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

A non-profit organisation, INTACH will provide technical support in restoring the southern and eastern facades of the building, which houses the Mumbai CST station and CR headquarters.

Sources said that while the southern side of the building, which has the office of the chief public relations officer, the cash office and the heritage gallery, would be completely revamped, the eastern side will also get a facelift. The INTACH will soon submit a detailed report on how the restoration work would be carried out to the railways. Conservation architect Vikas Dilawari, who will assist INTACH in the work, said, &ldquo;The visit was mainly to identify the spots that need restoration. The aim is to restore the building to its original glory.&rdquo;

Speaking to mid-day, Sunil Udasi, CR&rsquo;s chief public relations officer, said, &ldquo;The ceilings, partitions and cabins will be replaced with new ones. The cost of the entire restoration work will be finalised soon. The site visit was important as we needed to identify the spots that need restoration.&rdquo;
